Price formation and its dynamics in online auctions

چکیده
This research uses functional data modeling to study the price formation process in online auctions. It conceptualizes the price evolution and its first and second derivatives (velocity and acceleration respectively) as the primary objects of interest. Together these three functional objects permit us to talk about the dynamics of an auction, and how the influence of different factors vary throughout the auction. For instance, we find that the incremental impact of an additional bidder's arrival on the rate of price increase is smaller towards the end of the auction. Our analysis suggests that “stakes” do matter and that the rate of price increase is faster for more expensive items, especially at the start and the end of an auction. We observe that higher seller ratings (which correlate with experience) positively influence the price dynamics, but the effect is weaker in auctions with longer durations. Interestingly, we find that the price level is negatively related to auction duration when the seller has low rating whereas in auctions with high-rated sellers longer auctions achieve higher price levels throughout the auction, and especially at the start and end. Our methodological contributions include the introduction of functional data analysis as a useful toolkit for exploring the structural characteristics of electronic markets. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. STATISTICAL METHODS IN ECOMMERCE RESEARCH Chapter: Differential Equation Trees to Model Price Dynamics in Online Auctions
1.1 INTRODUCTION Empirical research of online auctions has been growing steadily in the last several years. Online auctions are different from offline auctions in several important ways: They are usually much longer, bidders and sellers are anonymous, and the barriers of entry are much lower for both bidders and sellers. These differences lead to auction dynamics that can be very different from...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Price Dynamics, Bidder Networks, and Market Structure in Online Art Auctions
One of the greatest contributions of e-comrnerce and online auctions is their ability to provide detailed bidding records in the form of a bid history. These data sources not only furnish dynamic information regarding the status of auctions, but also capture the essence of auction activities that was not accessible from live auctions. In this chapter, we explore three broad online auction issue...
متن کاملModeling Dynamics in Online Auctions: A Modern Statistical Approach
In this work we propose a modern statistical approach to the analysis and modeling of dynamics in online auctions. Online auction data usually arrive in the form of a set of bids recorded over the duration of an auction. We propose the use of a modern statistical approach called functional data analysis that preserves the entire temporal dimension in place of currently used methods that aggrega...
متن کاملExplaining and Forecasting Online Auction Prices and Their Dynamics Using Functional Data Analysis
Online auctions have become increasingly popular in recent years, and as a consequence there is a growing body of empirical research on this topic. Most of that research treats data from online auctions as crosssectional, and consequently ignores the changing dynamics that occur during an auction. In this article we take a different look at online auctions and propose to study an auction’s pric...
متن کاملDynamic Price Forecasting in Simultaneous Online Art Auctions
The global art market has undergone a huge transition in the last decade leading to the creation of new art hedge funds, art mutual funds, and art online auction sites. The increasing interest in the overall art market has also helped popularize emerging art markets such as Indian contemporary art. In this paper we focus on simultaneous online auctions (SOA) for Indian contemporary art. SOAs se...
